Rothay Manor occupies a Regency country house a short walk from the centre of Ambleside, set back from the road behind lawns and mature gardens that give it a quieter, more secluded feel than properties directly on the high street. The 23 bedrooms and suites are individually styled, ranging from classic doubles to larger suites with sitting areas, and the hotel holds four AA Red Stars in recognition of its consistency across rooms, food and service.

Rowan, the hotel's restaurant, has built a strong reputation locally for seasonal menus built around Cumbrian produce, and is as much a destination for non-residents as for guests staying the night. A drying room and boot storage cater specifically to walkers heading out onto the surrounding fells, a practical touch that marks the hotel out as built for the district rather than simply located in it.

Its position close to the river and a short stroll from Ambleside's shops, outdoor retailers and the start of several fell routes makes it a comfortable base for both active days on the hills and quieter ones spent closer to the town.
