Skelwith Bridge Hotel began life as a seventeenth-century farmhouse with an attached corn mill and hostelry, and retains a good deal of that older building's character across its 28 en-suite bedrooms. Set two miles west of Ambleside on the road towards Great and Little Langdale, it makes a practical base for anyone planning to spend their days out on the fells to the west of the town rather than in Ambleside itself.

The Bridge Restaurant and the Talbot Bar both draw on locally sourced ingredients, and a drying room for wet boots and waterproofs, along with secure cycle storage, mark the hotel out as built with walkers and cyclists specifically in mind.
