The Bulkeley occupies a prominent position on Castle Street in Beaumaris, facing out across the Menai Strait. It was built in 1832 by the Bulkeley family as a Georgian showpiece, in part to accommodate the young Princess Victoria on a royal visit, and it is now Grade I listed. The scale of the entrance hall, staircase and first-floor rooms still reflects that original ambition.

There are 43 en suite bedrooms. The front-facing rooms on the upper floors have the best of it, with sash windows framing the Strait and the Carneddau mountains behind; rooms at the rear are quieter and cheaper. Decoration is traditional and the building's age shows in places, so this is a hotel chosen for character and position rather than contemporary polish. Family rooms are available and dogs are accepted in some rooms.

Public areas include a restaurant, a coffee shop that opens onto the street, and bars serving real ale, with log fires in winter. Breakfast is served in the main dining room looking over the water. The hotel is a fixture of Beaumaris life, and the bars draw locals as well as residents.

Beaumaris itself is the most attractive town on Anglesey: a UNESCO-listed Edwardian castle at one end, a Victorian pier, an independent bookshop and a run of good cafés and restaurants, plus boat trips out to Puffin Island. The Menai Bridge and Bangor are fifteen minutes away and Snowdonia is within half an hour by car. The Bulkeley suits couples and older visitors who want to walk everywhere from the door, and anyone who values a historic seafront address over modern fittings.
