Darroch Learg has been run by the same family since 1961, and it occupies a substantial Victorian villa built in 1888 on the wooded lower slopes of Craigendarroch, looking south across the Dee valley towards Glen Muick and Lochnagar. The house was extended into a hotel through the 1950s and still has the feel of a private home rather than a formal country hotel, with just ten bedrooms and a series of sitting rooms and a conservatory dining room built to make the most of the view.

The hotel's reputation rests heavily on its kitchen, which has held a long-standing name for seasonal, ingredient-led cooking using produce from Deeside and the surrounding coast, served in a dining room that looks straight down the valley. Lunch, afternoon tea and dinner are all served to non-residents as well as guests, and the wine list has been built up over decades alongside the food.

Bedrooms are individually decorated rather than uniform, several with views over the garden and valley, and the pace of the place suits visitors who want a quiet base for walking Lochnagar or Craigendarroch and a serious dinner to come back to rather than a large hotel with extensive leisure facilities.
