Graig Wen sits on a wooded hillside above the Mawddach Estuary near Bontddu, a few miles inland from Barmouth on the Dolgellau side, and trades a seafront location for direct access onto the estuary shoreline and the Mawddach cycle trail. It is a small, deliberately low-key site that has picked up national press coverage and awards for its relaxed, unfussy approach to camping, with pitches for tents alongside electric hook-up spaces for camper vans and caravans.
Beyond the camping pitches, Graig Wen also offers glamping in yurts, shepherd's huts and a converted wagon, plus a handful of self-catering cottages, so it suits a wider range of visitors than a conventional touring park. The estuary frontage means some pitches can be walked to directly from the water's edge, and the surrounding oak woodland and cycle trail make it a natural choice for walkers and cyclists exploring the country between Barmouth and Dolgellau.
Facilities are simpler than at the larger coastal parks, in keeping with the site's back-to-nature character, but hook-ups and shower facilities are provided, and the setting - looking straight down the estuary towards Cadair Idris - is consistently rated among the best in the area. It is roughly a fifteen-minute drive to Barmouth itself, making it best suited to visitors happy to travel for the beach in exchange for a quieter, more scenic base.
