Chateau Rhianfa is one of the most unlikely buildings in Wales: a turreted French-Gothic château, built in 1849 as a gift from Sir John Hay-Williams to his wife Lady Sarah after the couple fell for the Loire valley on their travels. It stands directly on the Menai Strait a short drive from Beaumaris, with Snowdonia rising across the water and gardens that run down to a private stretch of shore.

Inside, the château keeps its grand proportions, with 27 individually decorated bedrooms, several function rooms and dining options that range from an intimate private room to the full-scale Banqueting Hall. Public rooms make the most of the building's history, with high ceilings, tall windows and views over the strait from many of the best rooms.

Its gardens, listed in their own right for historic interest, add a further layer to a stay, with mature planting tumbling toward the water. It suits couples and anyone marking a special occasion who wants somewhere genuinely distinctive within easy reach of Beaumaris rather than a stay in the town itself.
