The Merchant Hotel

Cathedral Quarter, Belfast city centre · Hotel

A grand former bank building in the Cathedral Quarter with an ornate Victorian bar, rooftop hot tubs and a ballroom-scale spa.

About The Merchant Hotel

The Merchant occupies the former headquarters of the Ulster Bank, a Grade A listed Victorian building whose domed Great Room bar, all gilt columns and crystal chandeliers, is one of Belfast's most photographed interiors. Rooms split between the original building and a contemporary glass extension, with the newer wing housing the rooftop garden, outdoor infinity hot tub and cocktail terrace overlooking the Cathedral Quarter's rooftops.

The hotel's spa runs to a sizeable pool and thermal suite, while afternoon tea in the Great Room has become something of a Belfast institution in its own right. Staff draw on the building's banking history throughout, and the ground-floor bar and brasserie stay busy with locals as well as guests, giving it a livelier, less hushed feel than many five-star properties.

Location puts guests directly among the Cathedral Quarter's bars, galleries and live music venues, a five-minute walk from Victoria Square and around fifteen minutes on foot to Titanic Belfast along the river.
