The Felin Fach Griffin sits in a hamlet on the A470 roughly midway between Brecon and Hay-on-Wye, in the gap between the central Beacons and the Black Mountains. It is a dining pub first and a place to stay second, and that order shapes the whole experience: people come here to eat, then find they would rather not drive home.
Eight bedrooms sit above and behind the pub, individually designed with a deliberately unfussy approach. There are no televisions, which the owners treat as a feature rather than an omission, and beds, bathrooms and breakfasts are taken seriously. Downstairs, flagstone floors, a wood-burning stove and mismatched furniture set a comfortable, lived-in tone that has been widely imitated and rarely bettered.
The kitchen holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand and has won the Good Pub Guide's Dining Pub of the Year for Wales repeatedly. Much of the produce comes from an organic kitchen garden behind the inn, with the rest sourced from Welsh farms and smokehouses. Menus are short and change constantly. Dinner, bed and breakfast rates are usually better value than booking a room and eating separately, given that dinner here is the point.
It suits couples and food-minded travellers above all, and works well as a base for Hay-on-Wye, Llangorse Lake and the Black Mountains ridges. Walkers can reach the central Beacons in about twenty-five minutes by car. Book early for the Hay Festival period in late May, when rooms in this part of the valley disappear months in advance.
