Housedean Farm sits just off the A27 roughly halfway between Brighton and Lewes, on a working arable and livestock farm that has been taking campers for more than sixty years. It lies inside the South Downs National Park and directly on the South Downs Way, which is a rare and useful combination - walkers on the national trail can drop straight onto the site at the end of a day without a detour.
The scale is deliberately small: about 25 generously sized grass pitches spread across sloping fields with views out over the Downs, plus a handful of wooden camping pods and a shepherd's hut for anyone who would rather not carry a tent. Shower and toilet facilities were rebuilt fairly recently and are simple but modern, and there is electric hook-up, wifi, a small shop and a play area. Fire pits are provided free, which sets the tone for the evenings.
What makes it work as a base for Brighton is the bus stop at the farm entrance, with frequent services in both directions to Lewes and into central Brighton, so a car is optional and a drink in town is not a problem. Ditchling Beacon is about five miles away and Devil's Dyke around ten, both reachable on foot along the ridge. Dogs are welcome and the atmosphere is relaxed and family-friendly rather than regimented, which suits walkers, cyclists and anyone who wants downland quiet with the city twenty minutes down the road. The pitches are unmarked and generously spaced, so there is room to spread out even in August, and the farm keeps numbers deliberately low. Book early for summer weekends and for the Brighton Pride period, when the site fills weeks in advance.
