The Old Hall Hotel traces its origins to 1573, when Bess of Hardwick and her husband the Earl of Shrewsbury built a fortified tower here for Mary Queen of Scots to visit while taking Buxton's waters, and it is generally reckoned to be the oldest hotel in England. That history sits alongside a working, comfortable hotel rather than a museum piece.
Its 30-plus bedrooms are individually decorated, reflecting the building's centuries of additions, and the hotel has a restaurant and wine bar looking directly onto Pavilion Gardens and the Opera House opposite. Recent ownership under the Champneys group has kept the building well maintained while retaining its historic character.
