About Darroch Learg

Darroch Learg has been run by the Franks family since 1961, which is more than sixty years of unbroken ownership and shows in the way the place is looked after. The house dates from 1888, built as a private residence on the wooded slope above Ballater, and became a hotel in the 1950s. It stands on Braemar Road with views south across the River Dee towards Glen Muick and the Lochnagar hills.

There are ten bedrooms, traditionally furnished rather than styled, and two comfortable sitting rooms where guests tend to end up before dinner. The scale is deliberately small: this is a hotel that trades on personal service and a settled, unhurried atmosphere rather than facilities. It has been a fixture of Scottish hotel guides for decades on exactly that basis.

The restaurant is central to the offer, working with seasonal Scottish produce across lunch, afternoon tea and dinner, with Deeside venison, beef and salmon all close at hand. Ballater itself is five minutes down the hill, a Victorian village with an unusually strong run of independent shops, and the walks up Craigendarroch and out along the Seven Bridges start nearby. Balmoral and Royal Lochnagar distillery are ten minutes west, Braemar half an hour further on.
