Duke House is a small Victorian townhouse on Victoria Street, immediately beside the green space of Christ's Pieces and a five-minute walk from Market Square, King's Parade and the Grand Arcade. It is a bed and breakfast rather than a hotel, with only five guest rooms, and it is run with the sort of attention to detail that keeps it near the top of Cambridge's accommodation rankings year after year.

Each of the five rooms is en-suite and individually designed, combining the original features of the house - fireplaces, cornicing, tall windows - with modern comforts including good beds, quality linen, well-finished bathrooms and fast wi-fi. The rooms vary in size and outlook, with some looking onto Christ's Pieces and others over the quieter rear of the property. A ground-floor room is available for guests who would rather not tackle stairs.

Breakfast is cooked to order and served in the dining room, with a full English among the options and an emphasis on local produce, and it is included in the rate. Rooms typically run from around £125 to £155 a night depending on category and season. There is no bar, restaurant or car park, which is the trade-off for a house of this size in a location this central, but the guest houses of Cambridge rarely come better appointed. Book well ahead for graduation weeks and the end of June, when the city fills.
