ABode occupies a run of historic buildings on the pedestrianised High Street, midway between the Westgate and Christ Church Gate, which makes it about as central as a Canterbury hotel can be. The conversion has been handled with care: the frontage and much of the older interior detail survive, while the 72 bedrooms behind them are firmly contemporary, with air conditioning, monsoon showers and good beds. Grades run from compact rooms up to spacious suites, and the jump is worth making if you want space rather than simply a bed.
The public rooms do a lot of work here. There is a brasserie serving modern European food, a bar for cocktails and champagne, a pub attached to the building and a small gym, so you can eat and drink without leaving the premises on a wet evening - though with the Kings Mile and Palace Street two minutes away, you probably will not want to.
The trade-off for the location is the location. This is the busiest street in Canterbury, and while pedestrianisation keeps the traffic away, weekend nights carry noise up from the bars. Ask for a room away from the front if you sleep lightly. There is no hotel car park, so drivers should plan on one of the city centre multi-storeys or leave the car at a park and ride.
