The House of Agnes is a Grade II* listed building on St Dunstan's Street with roots in the fifteenth century, and it is named in Dickens's David Copperfield as the home of Agnes Wickfield - a claim the house has understandably made the most of. During a recent renovation a rare astrolabic quadrant dated 1388 was found on the premises; it is now in the British Museum, which gives some idea of the building's pedigree.
There are seventeen bedrooms in total. Nine sit in the main house and are individually themed and named after cities, with features such as a roll-top bath or a spa bath; the other eight occupy a converted stable mews at the back, which are more uniform and generally quieter, with superking, king or twin beds. Breakfast is cooked to order and served in the wood-panelled Quadrant room, using local and organic Kentish produce where possible.
There is a bar and a small library, and behind the house lies the largest Victorian walled garden in Canterbury, which is a genuine luxury in a city this tightly packed. The location is among the best value in Canterbury: five minutes from the Westgate and the centre, three from Canterbury West station, with several good restaurants on the same street. Parking is available on site, which is more than most central properties can offer.
