It is a small, owner-run guest house rather than a hotel, holds a five-star gold award, and has built a long-standing reputation on the strength of the welcome rather than any particular grandeur.

The en-suite bedrooms are immaculately kept and professionally decorated, with television, fridge and tea and coffee facilities as standard; one has a four-poster bed and is the obvious choice for an anniversary. Wi-fi is provided throughout, and there is a walled garden at the back for a drink on a summer evening. Breakfast is served in the dining room and is generous enough to see off any thoughts of lunch.

The setting is the appeal for anyone who wants to sleep properly. There is no through traffic, no late bar noise and no crowds, yet the Westgate is a few minutes away and the cathedral not much further. Parking is available nearby, and the location works well for the University of Kent and the city's schools, so expect it to be busy around graduation and open days. With so few rooms, this is a place to book several weeks ahead.
