Yorke Lodge is a Victorian villa of 1887 on London Road, a little north-west of the walled city, and it has been run as a privately owned bed and breakfast for the best part of forty years. It holds a five-star guest accommodation rating, and the standard shows in the details: eight en-suite bedrooms, each decorated individually, with the proportions and high ceilings that only a house of this period provides.

Breakfast is the thing people remember. It is cooked on an Aga using locally sourced produce and served either in the dining room or in the light conservatory that opens onto a sun terrace and garden. The location suits visitors who want quiet. It is about ten minutes on foot to Canterbury West station and fifteen to twenty to the cathedral, along a route taking in St Dunstan's and the Westgate. The University of Kent campus is up the hill, so the house is popular with visiting academics and with parents during term and graduation weeks - book early for those. Dogs are welcome by arrangement, which is worth knowing in a city where few properties allow them.
