Elgano is a compact, independently run guest house at 58 Cathedral Road, at the Pontcanna end of the terrace. The rooms have been done in bold colours with modern en-suite bathrooms, flat-screen televisions and tea and coffee facilities — brighter and more contemporary than the traditional Cathedral Road style, and priced below most of the city-centre hotels.

The practical draw is parking. Guests who book direct through the guest house website or by telephone get a space on site at no charge, which in this part of Cardiff is worth having; residents' permit schemes make on-street parking difficult for visitors. Free wi-fi runs throughout, and breakfast arrangements are straightforward and unfussy.

Sophia Gardens and Bute Park are a two-minute walk, putting Glamorgan's county cricket ground and the riverside path immediately on the doorstep, and Cardiff Castle is around fifteen minutes on foot through the park. The shops and shopping centre in the centre are a little over a mile away. Pontcanna's own cafés, bakeries and restaurants are close enough that many guests never go further for dinner.
