Cul-Erg House sits at 9 Hillside on Atlantic Circle in Portstewart, a couple of minutes on foot from the sea and a short walk from the promenade. It is family-run and has held a four-star rating for years, which in the B&B grading system means consistently good rooms, service and breakfast rather than anything showy.

Accommodation covers singles, doubles, twins and deluxe rooms, plus a room with an external private bathroom offered at a lower rate, so there is something for most budgets. Rooms are bright and well kept, the house is quiet, and the hosts are the sort who will tell you where to eat and which beach to walk depending on the wind direction - genuinely useful information on this coast.

Portstewart is the calmer of the two western resorts, with a handsome seafront, Morelli's ice cream parlour on the prom and the two-mile National Trust strand at the edge of town, where Harry's Shack grills fish over charcoal in a timber cabin on the sand. Portstewart Golf Club is close, Portrush is five minutes east, and Bushmills, Dunluce Castle and the Giant's Causeway are all within half an hour. A reliable, good-value base for couples and walkers.
