The Causeway Hotel was built in 1836 as the first accommodation for visitors coming to see the stones, and it still occupies the single best address on the coast - directly on the UNESCO World Heritage Site, a few minutes' walk from the basalt columns and immediately beside the National Trust visitor centre.

The hotel has 28 bedrooms, refurbished in a style that stays fairly traditional, with the front-facing rooms looking out over the cliffs and the sea. It is a three-star property rather than a luxury one, and the pricing reflects that, but it has picked up recognition including Coastal Escape of the Year and Three Star Hotel of the Year at the Irish Hotel Awards. Food is served through the day in the bar and restaurant, which is handy given how few alternatives there are within walking distance.

What you are really buying is timing. Staying here means you can be down at the Causeway before the coaches arrive in the morning and back again in the evening once the day visitors have gone, which transforms the experience of a site that receives very heavy footfall. The coastal path towards Dunseverick and Portballintrae runs past the hotel, Bushmills and the distillery are two miles inland, and Carrick-a-Rede is around fifteen minutes east.
