Chester Brooklands is a small bed and breakfast on Brook Lane, a short distance from Hoole village on the north-east side of the city. It has been the owners' family home since 2001 and is run as a genuine four-room operation rather than a converted hotel, which means personal service, local knowledge and a level of attention that larger properties cannot offer.

The four bedrooms divide into two superior rooms with super-king beds and two standard rooms with king beds. All are en suite with a shower, WC and washbasin, and all have fast wifi. The house is entirely non-smoking. Rooms are comfortable and well kept rather than designed, and the superior rooms are noticeably more spacious if you are staying several nights or want somewhere to sit in the evening.

The practical detail that matters most in Chester is parking, and Brooklands includes one car park space per room booked – an unusual guarantee at this price and one that saves both money and the daily hunt for a space in the city centre. There is a bus stop outside with a frequent service into town, so the car can stay put for the duration of a stay.

Hoole village is five minutes away on foot and gives you a proper neighbourhood of independent restaurants, cafes, delis and pubs, including some of the better places to eat in Chester. The city centre and the walls are about fifteen minutes' walk, and the railway station is closer still. This suits couples, solo travellers and anyone touring by car who wants a quiet, well-run base rather than a hotel, and it books up quickly for race weekends.
