About Newhouse Farm Wild Camping
Newhouse Farm Wild Camping occupies a ten-acre grass field on a working farm at East Dean, within the Goodwood estate and around six miles north of Chichester, inside the South Downs National Park. It is licensed, legitimate camping on private land rather than true wild camping in the legal sense, but it is deliberately run to feel like it: an off-grid field surrounded by ancient woodland, with far-reaching views over the surrounding farmland and very little in the way of infrastructure beyond the basics.
The seventy-six pitches are all non-electric grass, taking tents, roof tents, trailer tents, campervans and motorhomes, though not touring caravans, and a handful of simple landpods are available for those without camping equipment of their own. There is no electric hookup, no showers and no WiFi; facilities run to composting and standard toilets, a drinking water point and a wash-up station, with fire pits available to bring or hire. Dogs are welcome on leads throughout the site.
The farm sits within an International Dark Sky Reserve, and quiet hours are enforced from ten at night, which together make it one of the better spots in the area for stargazing rather than for family entertainment; there is no shop or playground on site, with the nearest shops in West Dean and Boxgrove villages a short drive away. It opens seasonally from Easter to the end of September and suits campers after a genuinely basic, low-impact stay over one with facilities laid on. Goodwood's racecourse, motor circuit and Festival of Speed hillclimb are all within a few minutes of the farm, making it a useful, if spartan, base for the estate's events calendar as well as for walkers heading up onto the Downs.
