The Royal Oak

East Lavant, at the foot of the South Downs · Inn

A country inn with rooms and cottages in East Lavant, three miles north of Chichester, known for its restaurant and Downs views.

About The Royal Oak

The Royal Oak has operated as a pub in East Lavant, at the foot of the South Downs around three miles north of Chichester, for more than two hundred years, and now combines that history with a small number of bedrooms and two self-contained cottages in the grounds. The setting, looking straight up towards the chalk escarpment, is one of the more rural bases within easy reach of the city.

The kitchen leans on seasonal, local produce for its pub food, served in the restaurant, the bar or the garden depending on the weather, alongside a changing list of cask ales, craft beers and West Sussex ciders. The bedrooms and cottages are aimed at guests planning a longer, food-focused stay rather than a quick overnight.

Its position close to Goodwood makes it a popular base during the estate's motorsport and racing calendar, when rooms should be booked well in advance, and its distance from the city centre suits visitors happy to drive or taxi in for the cathedral and theatre rather than walk.
