Llanthony Priory Camping Field sits in the grounds of the ruined twelfth-century Augustinian priory in the Vale of Ewyas, one of the most atmospheric and remote settings for camping anywhere in the Black Mountains. It lies roughly ten miles north-east of Crickhowell over the hills, reached by a narrow, scenic road that climbs from the Vale of Ewyas, and is best suited to those who want a genuinely rural, back-to-basics camping experience rather than a serviced touring park.
The field is simple by design: pitches are for tents only, set on level grass beside the priory ruins with the Hatterrall Ridge and the Offa's Dyke Path rising directly above. Facilities are basic, reflecting the historic and rural setting, and campers should expect a straightforward experience with minimal services rather than hook-ups or a shop, though the priory itself has a bar in part of its ruined structure that is open to campers and passing walkers in season.
The location is the main draw, putting campers directly on the Offa's Dyke Path and within a short, steep climb of the Black Mountains ridges, making it a favourite base for serious hillwalkers tackling the Vale of Ewyas circuit or the longer ridge walks towards Hay Bluff. It is a quieter, more elemental alternative to the touring parks nearer Crickhowell, and suits campers prioritising scenery and access to the hills over facilities.
