The Exmoor White Horse Inn sits beside the bridge over the River Exe in Exford, one of the two or three villages that can genuinely claim to be at the centre of the moor. The building is a sixteenth-century coaching inn, creeper covered and low beamed, and it has long been the social hub for riders, walkers and shooting parties working the surrounding hills.

Bedrooms are en suite and traditional in style, with tea and coffee facilities and televisions, spread through the original inn and adjoining wings. Some are compact, as is normal in buildings of this age, but they are warm and comfortable and several look out over the river.

The bar is the real draw, with a wood burner, local ales and a collection of more than two hundred malt whiskies. The restaurant leans firmly local, with Exmoor trout, game birds, rare breed beef and a traditional carvery on Sundays, plus an extensive bar menu served through the day. The inn can arrange riding, fishing, shooting and mountain biking, and footpaths leave from the village green towards Dunkery Beacon and along the Exe valley. It is an easy, unpretentious base for a walking or riding holiday.
