Highcliffe House
Sinai Hill, Lynton, north Devon · B&B
Five-star adults-only Victorian villa above Lynton with sweeping views over the Bristol Channel, elegant rooms and an award-winning breakfast.
About Highcliffe House
Highcliffe House occupies a former Victorian gentleman's summer residence high on Sinai Hill above Lynton, and the position is the first thing anyone mentions: the front rooms and conservatory look out across the rooftops of the town, over the Bristol Channel and across to the Welsh coast on a clear day. It is adults only, which keeps the atmosphere calm.
There are a small number of individually styled en suite bedrooms, several with sea views, decorated in a comfortable country-house style with good beds, proper toiletries and no clutter. A guest lounge and a Devon gin bar occupy the ground floor, and breakfast has won repeated praise, with local eggs, west country meats and a kitchen happy to accommodate requests.
The house has taken Tripadvisor Travellers' Choice Best of the Best awards for several consecutive years, which for a property of this size says a good deal about the consistency of the hosting. Practically, it is a five-minute walk downhill into Lynton for restaurants and the cliff railway, with the Valley of Rocks half an hour along the coast path and Watersmeet a similar distance up the East Lyn gorge. There is free parking on site, which is valuable in Lynton, and dogs are not accepted.
