About Tarr Farm Inn
Tarr Farm Inn stands on the slope above Tarr Steps, the ancient clapper bridge of massive stone slabs that crosses the River Barle in the southern half of the national park. The building dates from the early 1600s and the setting is close to perfect: a wooded river valley that forms a National Nature Reserve, with the only sounds being water, sheep and the occasional walker.
Nine bedrooms are spread across the inn, refurbished in a clean contemporary style with large beds, good bathrooms, sherry and home-made biscuits on arrival. They are noticeably quieter than the average village inn because there is essentially nothing else here.
The kitchen has built a strong reputation over the years, with local game, Exmoor beef and lamb and river trout on the menu, and the operation has been called on to cater at Glastonbury and Badminton. Cream teas are served on the terrace in summer. Walking is the main activity: the riverside path upstream towards Withypool and downstream to Dulverton is among the best in Exmoor, and Winsford Hill rises directly behind. Dulverton, with its shops and restaurants, is about twenty minutes by car along narrow lanes.
