The Rising Sun occupies a row of thatched cottages directly on Lynmouth harbour, looking out across the bay towards Countisbury and the open Channel. Parts of the building are fourteenth century, and the interior runs to uneven floors, oak panelling and low ceilings, all of which it wears well. R D Blackmore is said to have worked on Lorna Doone here, and Shelley reputedly honeymooned in the cottage in the garden.

Rooms are en suite and individually shaped by the old fabric, with the best of them facing the harbour. A separate garden cottage suits guests wanting more space and privacy. The terraced garden climbing the cliff behind is a pleasant spot for a drink on a warm evening.

The restaurant makes the most of its coastal position, with locally landed fish and shellfish alongside Exmoor lamb and venison, and the bar pours west country ales. The location is outstanding for walkers: the South West Coast Path passes the door, the Two Moors Way begins at the harbour, the cliff railway up to Lynton is two minutes away, and the walk up the East Lyn gorge to Watersmeet takes about forty-five minutes. Parking in Lynmouth is limited, so check arrangements when booking.
