Parc-le-Breos sits in its own grounds in the Gower valley behind Parkmill, a nineteenth-century hunting lodge built for the Penrice estate and now run as a country house hotel and restaurant. The setting is unusually green for a peninsula better known for cliffs and sand: mature parkland, woodland walks and an ancient burial chamber a few hundred yards up the lane.

Rooms are individually designed and range from classic doubles through family rooms to deluxe rooms and suites, with pitch pine floors, fresh flowers and log fires in the public rooms. A separate self-catered two-bedroom log cabin, Quabs, suits families or groups who want more independence. The dining room holds an AA rosette and works closely with Gower producers, and the house also takes weddings and private functions, so it is worth checking the diary if you want a quiet weekend.

The location is the strongest argument for it. A footpath from the grounds leads through the valley to Three Cliffs Bay in around twenty minutes, and Parkmill puts you within easy reach of Oxwich, Pennard, Rhossili and Mumbles alike. Packages including dinner and Sunday stays are usually available and represent decent value against the standard rate.
