The Kildonan Hotel is one of the oldest licensed inns in Scotland, built in the 17th century and perched right on the seafront at Arran's southern tip, with the beach a stone's throw from the door. Its position puts it in the middle of a genuine wildlife hotspot, with seals hauled out on the rocks daily and dolphins, gannets and occasional basking sharks passing offshore in summer.
Rooms have been refurbished while keeping some of the building's older character, and a bistro-style dining area with floor-to-ceiling windows makes the most of the sea views over breakfast and dinner. The kitchen has a strong local reputation for seafood, including what regulars consider some of the best fish and chips on the island.
For visitors who want a wildlife-watching base rather than a central one, the Kildonan's seafront position and long history make it one of the more characterful choices on Arran's quieter southern coast.
