About Kinloch Campsite
Kinloch occupies a former croft on the shore of Loch Dunvegan in the north-west of Skye, with MacLeod's Tables — the two flat-topped hills that define this side of the island — filling the skyline inland. It is one of the few Skye campsites that combines a genuine waterfront setting with a village on the doorstep: Dunvegan and its shops, cafes, pubs and petrol station are a five-minute walk along the road.
The family who run it have invested steadily in the facilities, and the amenity block is modern and kept clean. There is a large grass field for tents, hardstanding pitches with electric hook-up for motorhomes and caravans, laundry and drying facilities, an accessible shower and toilet, charging sockets for devices and ice-pack refreezing. Free wifi covers the site, which is not something every Skye campsite can claim.
As a base it works well for the north-west third of the island. Dunvegan Castle and its seal-trip boats are a mile up the road, the Coral Beaches a short drive beyond that, and Neist Point about forty minutes west. Waternish, with the Stein Inn and Loch Bay, is a similar distance north, and Portree is roughly half an hour east. Dogs are welcome. The season generally runs from late March to October and the site takes advance bookings through its own system, which is worth using in high summer when the waterfront pitches go first. The loch itself is worth an evening: otters work the shoreline at dusk, herons stalk the shallows, and the sunsets over MacLeod's Tables are among the best in the north-west. Fresh water, chemical disposal and recycling points are all on site.
