Skeabost House sits on the shoreline of Loch Snizort, five miles north-west of Portree, beside one of the best salmon rivers on the island. It began life as a Victorian shooting lodge and retains the panelling, open fires and long corridors of that era, softened by a thorough modern refurbishment under the Sonas Collection.

Rooms are contemporary in feel with Highland detailing, spread between the main house and a converted garden lodge. Downstairs there are several distinct spaces to settle into: the West Pier restaurant, which faces the loch and serves a Scottish menu leaning on seafood and island meat; the more intimate Billiard Room; and a lounge where afternoon tea is served by the fire. The estate includes a nine-hole golf course, and the hotel can arrange fly fishing on the Snizort.

The location is a useful compromise. Portree and its restaurants are ten minutes east, Dunvegan Castle and the north-west peninsulas around twenty-five minutes west, and Trotternish, the Storr and the Quiraing are all comfortably reachable for an early start. The hotel is popular for weddings and exclusive-use stays, so it is worth checking the calendar when booking a quiet weekend.
