The Bosville sits in the heart of Portree, in a terrace of nineteenth-century cottages that have been knocked through and restored into a single boutique hotel. Some rooms look over the rooftops to the harbour and the Cuillin beyond; others face the town. All are comfortable rather than showy, with the low ceilings and thick walls that come with the building's age.

Downstairs there are two distinct halves. Dulse & Brose is the restaurant, an award-winning room built around Skye produce — shellfish, island lamb, foraged extras — with a menu that shifts through the season. The Merchant Bar next door is livelier and more informal, popular with locals as well as guests, and a good place to find out what the weather is actually going to do tomorrow.

The location is the main argument for staying here. Portree's harbour, shops, boat trips and bus stops are all within a couple of minutes on foot, so you can leave the car parked all evening. Sister property Marmalade is a short walk up the hill. For a mid-range stay that puts you in the middle of island life rather than looking at it from a distance, The Bosville is hard to better.
