The Gables is a family-run bed and breakfast on Viewfield Road, on the southern approach into Portree. It is deliberately small — three en-suite rooms, one double, one twin and one triple — which means the hosts have time for the kind of local advice that saves visitors a wasted morning at a full car park.

Rooms are simple and well kept, each with a television, hospitality tray, hairdryer and free wifi. Breakfast is served early enough for walkers heading north to the Storr or the Quiraing before the crowds, and there is off-street parking, which is genuinely valuable in Portree between June and September.

The walk into the town centre takes around ten minutes downhill, putting the harbour, restaurants, shops and bus stops within easy reach without paying town-centre prices. For couples, small families or anyone touring Skye on a budget who still wants a comfortable, personal place to come back to, it is a dependable choice. The three rooms go quickly in high summer, so book several months ahead for July and August.
