Hard Days Night Hotel occupies the Central Buildings on North John Street, a Grade II listed block of 1884 with a heavily carved stone facade into which four Beatles figures were added during the conversion. The hotel opened in 2008 and stands immediately next to Mathew Street and the Cavern Club, which makes it the obvious base for anyone in Liverpool primarily for the music.

There are 110 bedrooms, each individually designed and each hung with specially commissioned artwork of the band by Shannon, which is done with more restraint than the concept suggests: the rooms themselves are conventionally smart, and the theme is carried by the pictures rather than by memorabilia. Two suites, the Lennon and the McCartney, take the idea further, the former with a white grand piano. Standard rooms are a reasonable size for a city-centre conversion, and the quietest face the internal courtyard.

Blakes Restaurant handles breakfast and dinner, and Bar Four serves cocktails with a piano in the corner and live music on some evenings. The hotel also has a large function room used for weddings and events, and holds an eco certification. Service is generally well reviewed, with the location and the theme drawing most of the praise and the odd complaint about noise from the surrounding streets.

Mathew Street is loud until late every night of the week in summer, so this is not a hotel for anyone seeking quiet. It is, though, about as central as accommodation gets: Liverpool ONE is three minutes away, the Pier Head and Royal Albert Dock around ten, and Lime Street station a similar walk. Best suited to Beatles pilgrims, weekend groups and first-time visitors who want everything within a few streets.
