Hope Street Hotel opened in 1999 in a Venetian palazzo-style building of 1860 that began life as a carriage works, and it was the first boutique hotel in the city. Its position at 40 Hope Street, roughly midway between the Anglican and Metropolitan cathedrals, puts it in the most attractive quarter of Liverpool, surrounded by Georgian terraces, the Everyman Theatre, the Philharmonic Hall and several of the better restaurants in town.

The hotel has grown to around 149 bedrooms across the original building and a newer wing. Seven room types run from king doubles up to rooftop suites with private terraces, city views and outdoor spa baths. The style is restrained: wooden floors, natural materials, flat-screen televisions and large walk-in showers with Temple Spa products. Rooms at the top of the building have the views; those in the original carriage works have the higher ceilings and the more interesting proportions.

Two restaurants operate on site. The London Carriage Works serves modern British cooking and holds two AA Rosettes and a notable wine list; 1931, named for the year the building's neighbour was completed, does hand-stretched pizza, pasta and sharing plates from noon until ten. There is also a spa with a swimming pool, an outdoor vitality pool, saunas and a steam room, along with meeting and event spaces and 24-hour room service.

The location suits theatre-goers, couples and anyone visiting the cathedrals or the university. Lime Street station is about twelve minutes on foot and Liverpool ONE around fifteen, both downhill on the way there. Rates start well below what the building suggests, particularly midweek and out of season, which makes it one of the better value four-star options in the city.
