About Cashel Campsite
Cashel lies on the eastern shore of Loch Lomond between Balmaha and Rowardennan, set in mature forest that runs down to a long stretch of open lochside grass. It is one of the few places on this side of the loch where you can pitch a tent within a few steps of the water, and the shoreline here is shingle and grass rather than rock, with views west across the loch to the Luss hills.
Pitching is a mixture of open grass by the shore and sheltered bays cut into the woodland behind, which gives you a genuine choice depending on the weather. Exposed pitches catch the breeze and keep the midges moving; the woodland pitches are calmer when a westerly is blowing up the loch. Facilities are straightforward but sufficient, with toilets and hot showers, washing-up areas, drinking water points and electric hook-ups on a proportion of the pitches. Dogs are welcome on leads, and there is a small shop stocking essentials during the main season.
The site suits walkers and paddlers more than families looking for entertainment, because there is very little to do here other than be outdoors, which is rather the point. The West Highland Way runs along the shore, the car park for the Ben Lomond path at Rowardennan is roughly two miles further north, and there are forest trails behind the site including the Cashel forest walks. Balmaha, four miles south, has the nearest pub and shop. Cashel operates seasonally and is closed through the depths of winter.
