About Burrs Country Park Club Campsite
Burrs Country Park sits on the River Irwell just north of Bury town centre, laid out among the remains of two nineteenth-century cotton mills. Higher Woodhill and Burrs Mill both stood here, and their foundations, weirs and mill races are still visible along the riverbank, now softened by woodland and threaded with paths. The Caravan and Motorhome Club site occupies a sheltered corner of the park with around 85 pitches, the majority of them hardstanding and a handful fully serviced. It takes caravans, motorhomes and campervans rather than tents, and it stays open all year to members and non-members alike.
Facilities are the predictable club standard, which is to say reliable rather than exciting: heated toilet and shower blocks, laundry, washing-up sinks, a motorhome service point, electric hook-ups on the great majority of pitches and a small stock of essentials at reception. Wi-fi is available and dogs are welcome, with the country park immediately outside the gate giving them somewhere useful to go.
The setting is the reason to book. The East Lancashire Railway runs alongside the site, so restored steam locomotives pass within sight of the pitches on operating days, and Bury Bolton Street station is a short walk away. The Irwell Sculpture Trail passes through the park, Burrs Activity Centre runs climbing and watersports sessions, and Holcombe Hill and Ramsbottom lie a few miles north. For the city, walk or take the bus into Bury and pick up the Metrolink tram, which reaches Manchester Victoria in around twenty-five minutes and removes any need to drive in.
