The Lowry opened in 2001 on Chapel Wharf, on the Salford bank of the River Irwell and connected to the Manchester side by Santiago Calatrava's white footbridge. It was the city's first five-star hotel and for two decades it was effectively the only one, which is why visiting football squads, touring musicians and film crews still default to it. The building is glass and steel rather than Victorian brick, and the mood inside is calm and contemporary rather than showy.

There are 165 rooms and suites, generously sized by British standards, with river or city views, air conditioning, walk-in showers and separate baths in the higher categories. The Presidential Suite occupies a corner of the top floor. Because the hotel was designed rather than converted, the layout works properly: wide corridors, good lifts, and rooms that hold their temperature and keep out noise from the ring road.

The River Restaurant looks out over the Irwell and serves French-influenced cooking, the Lowry Lounge and Bar runs live music at weekends, and the Re:treat spa has treatment rooms, a gym and a relaxation area. Parking is on site, which is unusual this close to the centre and useful if you are driving. Deansgate and Spinningfields are a two-minute walk across the footbridge, the Cathedral and the Northern Quarter about ten minutes, and Salford Central station is closer still.
