Balmer Lawn stands on the Lyndhurst road just outside Brockenhurst, with lawns running down to the stream and open heath directly opposite. The white gabled building started life as a mid-nineteenth-century hunting lodge and served as a military hospital and staff headquarters in both world wars before returning to hotel use. It has been family-owned for years, and the atmosphere is more relaxed and less corporate than the size of the place might suggest.

There are around 55 rooms, ranging from compact doubles to family rooms and suites, with several having views across the lawns to the forest beyond. Decor is contemporary rather than period, and the better rooms are noticeably more generous than the entry-level ones. Family rooms and interconnecting options are easier to find here than at most comparable New Forest hotels, and dogs are accommodated in designated rooms.

Facilities include an indoor pool, a small outdoor pool used in summer, a sauna, a gym, tennis and a spa offering massage and reflexology alongside standard treatments. Beach Bar & Restaurant handles the more relaxed end of the food offer, while Beresfords is the main restaurant, serving modern British cooking with rosette recognition and a wine list of some depth. Afternoon tea and Sunday lunch both draw people in from the surrounding villages.

The location is the practical strength. Brockenhurst village and its station are about ten minutes on foot, cycle hire is close by, and the forest tracks start on the far side of the road. It is a straightforward base for walking, cycling and days out to Beaulieu, Lymington or the coast, and the mix of spa, pools and family rooms means it works for several kinds of trip at once. Weddings are held here regularly, so it is worth checking what else is booked if you want a quiet weekend.
