About Malmaison Newcastle
Malmaison Newcastle sits right on the water at 104 Quayside, in a Grade II listed warehouse built for the Co-operative Wholesale Society. It was one of the first big conversions of the Quayside's regeneration and it still holds one of the best addresses in the city: the Gateshead Millennium Bridge is directly outside, with BALTIC and the Glasshouse on the far bank a couple of minutes across it.
There are 122 rooms and suites over nine floors, decorated in the group's signature dark, moody style with mood lighting, deep colours and generous beds. One entire floor takes its theme from Tyneside shipbuilding. The rooms facing the river are the ones to ask for, and the higher you go the better the view of the bridges; rooms at the back are quieter but look at brick. Bathrooms have power showers and full-size toiletries, and wi-fi is included.
Chez Mal Brasserie occupies the ground floor and does French-leaning brasserie cooking - steaks, moules, a good breakfast - with tables by the windows overlooking the water. The bar is a proper destination in its own right, with craft beers, a long cocktail list and a following among locals as well as guests. There is a small spa on site offering treatments and a fitness room.
This is a hotel for people who want the river on their doorstep. The Quayside walk east towards the Ouseburn or west under the bridges starts at the front door, the Sunday market sets up along the same stretch, and the climb up Dean Street or the Castle Stairs puts you in Grainger Town in under ten minutes. Central Station is roughly a fifteen-minute walk or a short taxi, and parking is in a nearby multi-storey rather than on site.
