The Bamburgh Castle Inn occupies a commanding spot above the harbour at Seahouses, looking out across the water to the Farne Islands. It is one of the larger properties in The Inn Collection Group and has 59 bedrooms, which makes it more substantial than the word inn suggests, but the ground floor still functions as a proper pub with a good crowd of locals as well as visitors.

Rooms are straightforward and well kept rather than luxurious, and the ones worth paying extra for are the premium sea-view rooms, several of which have balconies. Family rooms, accessible rooms and designated dog-friendly rooms are all available, which makes it one of the more practical bases on this stretch of coast. Expect comfortable beds, good showers and simple modern decoration.

The kitchen turns out generous pub food through the day, from fish and chips and pies to Sunday roasts, and the bar keeps a rotating selection of Northumbrian beers. The terrace and the sea-facing windows are the best seats in the building on a clear evening. The inn has won regional tourism awards and been a finalist in the Great British Pub Awards.

Seahouses is the departure point for boat trips to the Farne Islands to see puffins and grey seals, and Bamburgh Castle and its beach are three miles up the road. Dunstanburgh, Craster and Holy Island are all within easy reach. This is a good-value option for families, walkers on the Northumberland Coast Path and anyone travelling with a dog, and it books up well ahead in summer.
