The Storehouse Restaurant with Rooms

Bridge Street Wynd, central Kirkwall · Hotel

Eight luxury en-suite rooms above a serious restaurant in a converted Kirkwall storehouse, a minute from the cathedral and the harbour.

About The Storehouse Restaurant with Rooms

The Storehouse occupies a converted stone building on Bridge Street Wynd, in the oldest part of Kirkwall and a short walk from St Magnus Cathedral, the harbour and the main shopping street. The conversion has been done with restraint, keeping the thick walls and proportions of the original while fitting out eight en-suite bedrooms to a standard that stands comparison with anywhere in the north of Scotland.

Rooms are graded from Classic upwards, with rates starting around £140 including breakfast in the quieter months and rising through the summer. Expect good beds, proper bathrooms and a calm, contemporary finish rather than tartan and antlers. The building is small enough that the atmosphere stays personal, and staff are used to guiding first-time visitors around the archipelago.

The restaurant is the other half of the proposition and a genuine destination in its own right, serving dinner in the evening with a menu built around Orkney beef, lamb and shellfish. The Times named it among the top Scottish island hotels in 2023. Being able to eat like this and then climb a flight of stairs to bed is a considerable advantage on a windy Orkney night, and it makes the Storehouse an easy recommendation for a special trip.
