About Oxford Camping and Caravanning Club Site
This is as close as camping gets to central Oxford. The site sits off the Abingdon Road at number 426, tucked behind the Go Outdoors store just over a mile south of Carfax, and it is the only proper campsite within the city boundary. Everything about it is built around that position rather than around scenery: the Redbridge Park and Ride is immediately next door, there is a bus stop at the gate, and a Tesco and a takeaway are a two-minute walk away.
The pitching is level open grass with hardstandings for larger units, and pitches are generously sized at thirty to forty square metres. There is a single heated toilet block with showers, washbasins and a dishwashing area, plus a laundry, a chemical disposal point, gas sales and free wi-fi across the site. It is run by the Camping and Caravanning Club, so the wardens are on hand and the standards are predictable, but non-members are welcome and can join on arrival if that works out cheaper for a longer stay. Dogs are allowed. There is no shop, pool or playground - the surrounding city supplies all of that.
What you are paying for is the walk. You can follow the Thames path north past the boatyards and be at Folly Bridge and Christ Church Meadow in around twenty-five minutes, or take the bus and be in the centre in ten. That makes it the obvious choice for anyone who wants to see Oxford properly without paying city hotel rates or worrying about parking. The trade-off is road noise from the Abingdon Road and a setting that is functional rather than pretty, and it is busy through the summer, so book ahead for weekends and for the June graduation period.
