All-year hardstanding site at Castleton, walkable to the caverns and Mam Tor
Losehill Caravan Club Site sits on the edge of Castleton in the Hope Valley, at the point where the White Peak limestone meets the Dark Peak gritstone. That boundary is why the surroundings are so varied: Mam Tor and the Great Ridge rise directly to the north west, Winnats Pass cuts through the limestone just up the road, and four show caverns including Treak Cliff, the world's only working Blue John mine, are within walking distance of the pitch.
The site has 81 pitches, all hardstanding, which is a significant advantage in a valley that collects rain off the surrounding moors and keeps the site usable through winter. It is open all year. Facilities include sanitary blocks with showers, laundry, washing-up areas, an on-site shop, LPG, wireless internet, and disabled and family facilities. There is a children's play area, and dogs are allowed. Electric hook-ups are standard across the site.
Pitch prices with hook-up run from roughly £15 to £16 per night, with additional charges per extra adult and child and awnings included at no extra cost. It is aimed squarely at caravans and motorhomes rather than tents, so tent campers should look at the nearby Camping and Caravanning Club site at Fields Farm instead. Castleton itself is two minutes away on foot, with pubs, cafes, a village shop and the Blue John shops, and Hope station is a couple of miles down the valley for train access to Sheffield and Manchester. Book well ahead for summer and for the Castleton Christmas lights period, when the village fills.
