About The Cavendish Hotel at Baslow
The Cavendish sits on the edge of Baslow, on land that has belonged to the Chatsworth Estate since the 1830s. The building began life as the Peacock Inn and was rebuilt and renamed in the 1970s by the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire. A full refurbishment completed in recent years reworked the interiors under designer Nicola Harding, drawing on Chatsworth's own collections, and the hotel was named The Times and The Sunday Times Hotel of the Year for 2025.
There are 28 bedrooms spread across the main house and an adjoining townhouse, ranging from compact doubles to larger suites. Rooms mix antique furniture, stone fireplaces and older estate pieces with modern bathrooms and good beds. Many look east over the estate parkland towards the moors, and the artwork hung throughout the hotel includes pieces by Elisabeth Frink, Phyllida Barlow and Jeremy Deller rather than the usual hotel prints.
Food is a serious part of the offer. The restaurant holds three AA Rosettes and cooks modern British dishes built around estate and local produce, with a more relaxed all-day menu served in the Garden Room and lounge. Breakfast is generous, and afternoon tea is popular with day visitors. There is a bar, several sitting rooms with fires, a garden running down towards the River Derwent, and free parking on site.
Chatsworth House and garden are a mile and a half away on foot across the park, and the farm shop at Pilsley is a short drive. Bakewell, Eyam and the Derwent Valley mills are all within easy reach, and walking routes onto Baslow Edge and Curbar Edge start close to the village. It suits couples wanting a comfortable base with good food, and anyone visiting Chatsworth who would rather walk there than drive.
