The Roseleigh occupies a Grade II listed townhouse of 1871 on Broad Walk, the terrace that runs along the edge of Buxton's Pavilion Gardens. It is run by owners Gerard and Maggi Heelan and carries an AA four-star gold award, having appeared in the Good Hotel Guide for nine consecutive years. It is a guest house in the proper sense: small, personally run and reliant on repeat visitors.

Bedrooms are spread over three floors and vary in size and outlook, with the front rooms looking across the gardens and lake towards the hills beyond. All are en suite, with tea and coffee, televisions and free wifi, and are decorated in a warm traditional style with good beds and plenty of storage. There is no lift, so the upper rooms involve stairs. A guest lounge with a bar and a fire is available through the day, and the owners are a useful source of walking and touring advice.

Breakfast is cooked to order using local suppliers, with a full Derbyshire option alongside lighter and vegetarian choices, served in a dining room overlooking the gardens. Evening meals are not offered, but Buxton has a good spread of restaurants and pubs within a few minutes' walk. Parking is on-street with permits provided.

The position suits people who want a town base rather than an isolated one. Buxton Opera House, the Crescent, the thermal baths and the Pavilion Gardens are all within five minutes on foot, and Poole's Cavern and Solomon's Temple are a short walk uphill. The Goyt Valley, Monsal Trail, Chatsworth and Bakewell are all within half an hour by car. It suits couples, theatregoers and walkers who like a comfortable, sociable base.
