Llys Meddyg

Newport, Pembrokeshire Coast National Park · Inn

Restaurant with rooms in a Georgian townhouse in Newport, below Carningli, known for foraged ingredients and a walled kitchen garden.

About Llys Meddyg

Llys Meddyg occupies a Georgian coaching house on the main street of Newport, a small town on the north Pembrokeshire coast beneath the hill of Carningli. The name means physician's house, which is what the building originally was. It is run as a restaurant with rooms rather than a full hotel, and the kitchen is the reason most people book.

There are eight or so bedrooms divided between the main house, the mews at the back and a garden suite. Main house rooms are the largest, with high ceilings, big beds, roll-top or freestanding baths and views over the street or garden. The mews rooms are quieter and open onto the walled garden. Decoration mixes original features with contemporary furniture, Welsh blankets and good bathrooms; there is nothing corporate about any of it. Some rooms take dogs.

The restaurant makes heavy use of the kitchen garden, local shellfish landed at Newport and Fishguard, and foraged ingredients from the surrounding hills and shoreline; the owners run foraging and fishing days for guests during parts of the year. There is a cellar bar with an open fire for colder evenings and a garden kitchen used for informal dining and drinks in summer. Breakfast is cooked to order and included.

Newport sits directly on the Pembrokeshire Coast Path, and the estuary, Parrog and the beach at Newport Sands are all within walking distance. Carningli and the Preseli Hills rise straight behind the town for a half-day's walking, and Pentre Ifan burial chamber and the coastal villages towards Cardigan are close by. It suits couples and walkers who want somewhere small, food-focused and easy to reach on foot from the path.
