About Plymouth Sound Club Campsite
Plymouth Sound Club Campsite occupies a headland above the Sound at Down Thomas, on the coast south-east of Plymouth, with views out across the water towards Cornwall from many of its pitches. Run by the Caravan and Motorhome Club but open to non-members as well, it sits directly on the South West Coast Path and close to the Plym Valley Cycleway, making it a strong choice for visitors planning walking or cycling days rather than a purely city-based stay.
The site has around sixty pitches, the great majority with 16-amp electric hook-ups, set on open grass with the coastal views as the main draw rather than dense landscaping. Tents, touring caravans and motorhomes are all accommodated, and there is a chemical toilet point and motorhome service point on site, along with a dedicated dog walk for visitors travelling with pets. There is no static accommodation, swimming pool or shop on site, keeping the emphasis on the setting and the coast path rather than on-site entertainment.
Down Thomas and the wider Wembury coast are known for clean water and rock pools, and the site's position gives easy access to nearby beaches as well as the passenger ferry and water taxi routes that run into Plymouth from Mount Batten. Its exposed clifftop position means it can catch a stiff breeze even in summer, so a well-anchored tent or awning is worth having, but for anyone wanting sea views and direct coast path access within a short drive of Plymouth, it is hard to beat.
