About Badgells Wood Camping
Badgells Wood sits within the Birling Estate on the North Kent Downs, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty a little under two and a half miles from the A227 turning between Meopham and Wrotham. The site occupies part of Whitehorse Wood, a designated local wildlife site of some 250 acres, and pitches are laid out individually among the trees rather than in rows on open grass, giving each group genuine woodland privacy.
Every pitch comes with its own fire pit, along with access to hot showers and composting toilets, and the site accepts traditional tent camping, pre-erected bell tents for those who want a simpler glamping-style stay, and vans and motorhomes that can be driven in and parked up. There is no WiFi or mobile signal to speak of, which regular visitors tend to count as part of the appeal rather than a drawback, and an on-site school runs bushcraft, archery and campfire cooking sessions for anyone wanting more structured activity during their stay.
The wood's history runs deeper than its camping use: during the Second World War it formed part of a British Army pre-officer cadet training camp through which tens of thousands of cadets passed. Today it is a quiet, low-key alternative to Kent's larger holiday parks, best suited to campers happy to go without a shop or pool in exchange for genuine seclusion, with Rochester Castle and Cathedral around a thirty-minute drive away for day trips.
