About The Salutation
The Salutation was designed in 1912 by Sir Edwin Lutyens, working with garden designer Gertrude Jekyll's contemporary George Stuart Thomas on the grounds, and remains one of the most striking places to stay anywhere in Kent. The main house and its outbuildings, including the Coach House and Gardener's Cottage, have been converted into individually furnished bedrooms with antique pieces, roll-top baths and views over the gardens or the town.
Guests have use of nearly four acres of walled and woodland garden, created as one of Lutyens and Jekyll's finest collaborations and open to the public separately by day, along with a restaurant serving seasonal Kentish produce in a series of elegant, high-ceilinged rooms.
Tucked just inside the old town walls near St Mary's church, the hotel is a short level walk from the Guildhall, the quay and Strand Street, making it an easy base for exploring Sandwich on foot despite its secluded, private feel.
